While having declined slightly in popularity, PHRF racing remains the dominant form of racing on Lake Pontchartrain as well as the Gulf Coast and makes up the largest class of racers in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.
Boats are assigned a handicap based on several physical factors related to their boat. The intent is to level the playing field between cruising boats and racing sleds in order to make the races about skipper and crew skills.
